ARMED ROBBERY: Marshalltown Officer Shot

A Marshalltown Police officer was shot Friday morning after chasing two people suspected of robbing a credit union.

The Lennox Credit Union at 1004 E. Main St was robbed around 9:30 a.m. and during a short foot chase one of the suspects, 22-year-old Ben Crisantos turned on Officer Vern Jefferson and shot him in the leg. Jefferson returned fire and struck Crisantos in the hip.

Crisantos and the other suspect, 22-year-old Abel Ramirez were taken into custody. Crisantos is charged with attempted murder and Ramirez is facing an armed robbery charge.

Jefferson and Crisantos were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. They have since been released from the hospital.

Marshalltown Schools were put on lockdown for about an hour Friday morning while the incident played out.
