ELECTION DAY: Voting Time Is Here

As you get ready to head to the polls and cast your ballot on Election Day, there are a few things you need to know.

First, if you haven’t registered to vote, that doesn’t mean you can’t vote. You can register at your polling location.

In order to do that, you’ll need to bring proof of ID, which can be a drivers license, non-driver ID card, military or student ID or a passport.

You’ll also need to show proof of residence. That can be a lease, utility bill, paycheck stub or bank statement.

If you don’t have that information, you can bring an attester.  That’s someone who lives in your precinct who can attest to the fact that you are who you say you are and you live where you say you live.

If you have registered to vote, but you don’t have you’re voter registration card Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz says you won’t need it.

“You need to know you’re name and birthday.  You could be challenged if a poll worker doesn’t know who you are, they could ask for identification.  But voter ID, unfortunately, is not Iowa law.  So you can show up to the polls without an ID,” says Schultz.

Once you’ve voted on the front of the ballot, you’ll want to make sure to turn it over.  That’s where you’ll find the judicial ballot.  That includes the Supreme Court retention vote for Justice Wiggins and three other Supreme Court justices appointed by Governor Branstad.

Polk county voters will also find public measure a on their ballots. That’s for the water and land legacy bond.

If that passes, the county will get $50 million in borrowing authority to buy land for preservation near developing areas. The money would be used for land and habitat protection as well as improvements to parks, waterways, and trails.

The cost is about $9 per year for a $100,000.

Polls are open until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
