For students at a Des Moines elementary school, warm clothes came just in time to beat the cold.
Monday, West Des Moines based Aviva donated coats and boots to more than 400 kids at Cattell Elementary School.
All of the coats and boats were brand new thanks to a partnership with JC-Penney and Shoe Carnival.
It’s the 19th year that the company has worked with Des Moines schools.
At Cattell, 85% of families are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
Organizers say it was crucial to lend them a helping hand.
“Parents are working really hard to provide for their kids and I think this is just one way to ease the burden of that,” said Mindy Jones, the principal at Cattell Elementary School.
“There has been a real mixed reaction today. We’ve seen everything from teachers crying to kids jubilant and giggling,” said Amanda Steward from Aviva USA.
Later this week, 300 more sets of coats and boots will be donated to students at McKinley Elementary School.
