USE AGAIN: Company Takes Unwanted Items

Before you start your holiday shopping, you may want to make room in your closets.

There’s a new way to get rid the clothes and shoes that don’t fit anymore. A company called Usagain started putting green and white bins around the metro earlier this fall.

You can put clothes, shoes, bedding, and drapes in there any time of day or night.

Usagain is a for-profit green company that sells about half the textiles collected to second hand shops around the country. A small percentage that can’t be used is recycled.

The rest goes to third world countries.

“There are people who can’t afford new clothes, probably have one outfit for every day. That’s where a lot of these clothes go to. There’s a huge demand,” says Greg Nelson with Use Again.

Each store that hosts these bins gets money for the amount of goods they collect.

The co-owner of L & K Sportscards and More on East Euclid, where one of the bins is located, says they’ll donate their money to the Animal Rescue League.

The spokesperson says there are plans to open a Usagain warehouse in Des Moines next year that would create about a dozen jobs.
