Officials say four members of the same family are dead following a house fire in Lake City overnight.

The Lake City Police Department says the fire was discovered around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday when Patrolman Dana Cook was investigating suspicious smoke in the downtown area of Lake City. Officer Cook was able to pinpoint the source of the smoke in the southern part of the town, where the home at 703 S. Illinois Street was found to be on fire.

The home was fully engulfed in flames, but Officer Cook tried to get inside and search for people. The intense heat and smoke forced him back.

The family of the victims identified them as 23-year-old Tyra Pierson and her 10-month-old son Xavier Pierson. Also killed in the fire was 8-year-old Madison Pierson and 3-year-old Wyatt Pierson, who were siblings of Tyra Pierson.

The Iowa State Fire Marshall's Office is helping with the investigation into the cause of the fire.
