Marshalltown police say a man was hit by a train early Wednesday morning.

It happened just before 5:00 a.m. at the Union Pacific railroad tracks under the Center Street viaduct.

Railroad employees called police to report a man trapped under the train’s engine.

Union Pacific employees and rescue crews were able to free the man then paramedics took him to the hospital, and later took him by helicopter to a trauma center.

The name of the man and his condition are not being released until his family is notified.

The incident remains under investigation, and officials want to remind the public that it is against the law and very dangerous to be on railroad property.
