Seed companies sold out of winter rye as farmers increased their acreage of winter cover crops across Iowa.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service of the USDA encourages planting of crops following corn and soybeans that will protect the soil, improve the soil structure, hold nitrogen for later use, control weeds and increase yields in the following year.  

Farmers are also planting Tillage Radishes to break up hard ground and to offer fall grazing in some areas.
