MURPHY’S LAW: Hawks Challenged, #1 Upset, Ferentz Bonus

By Chris Hassel

Hawkeye fans hoping for a pick-me-up from the basketball team after a miserable year of football — aren’t getting it. The Hawks got blown out by Virginia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, 95-79. It’s Iowa’s second straight loss. I think the Hawks will be a much better team in conference play, but I also thought they’d be a lot better in the early going. This doesn’t look like a tournament team.

All that being said, Devin Marble and Aaron White look even better than they did a year ago. I think we will see both of them in the NBA. On the flip side of things, I don’t expect to see much production out of Adam Woodbury this season. But when it’s all said and done, he will go down as one of the greatest Hawkeyes of all-time.

Iowa hasn’t won a game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge since 2005. The Hawks are 2-10 all-time in the series.

The Iowa State women destroyed Drake, 87-45. Bulldog starters accounted for just 11 points. Jennie Baranczyk has her work cut out for her in year one of a Drake re-building project.

We had our first big game of the season on the High School hardwood, Tuesday night. The third-ranked Des Moines East girls knocked off #1 Southeast Polk.

If Kansas State and Oklahoma win on Saturday, Iowa State is likely headed to Dallas or Houston to play either Purdue or Minnesota. I’m hoping for K-State or OU to lose so that ISU may get bumped to the Music City Bowl in Nashville. Good town, and possibly a good opponent. The matchup in Nashville could be against Vanderbilt.

On January 31, Kirk Ferentz will be paid a “longevity” bonus of nearly $500,000 just for being employed.

Shawn Johnson lost in the finals of Dancing with the Stars.
