Two people were arrested then sent to the hospital after a high speed chase in the metro overnight.

It started just after midnight at the 143 interchange along Interstate 80 north of Altoona.

The Iowa State Patrol tried pulling over a driver because the registration sticker on the license plate was partially covered. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase from Altoona and then onto Highway 163.

Speeds reached more than 100 miles an hour.

Troopers tried twice during the chase to get the car to stop using a pit maneuver. The driver finally lost control and drove into the ditch near Prairie City.

Sgt. Scott Bright with the Iowa State Patrol says Anthony Corvino, the driver, swallowed a large amount of methamphetamine and had to be airlifted to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

The passenger, Caleb Etter, also ingested meth and was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

Charges are expected to be filed in the case after the suspects’ release from the hospital.
