A Democrat has resigned from the Iowa House of Representatives, just three weeks after he was re-elected.

Brian Quirk of New Hampton made the surprise announcement Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement, Quirk thanked those he served but he didn’t say why he’s leaving the Statehouse.

The statement reads, “It`s been a great honor serving the people of Chickasaw County and surrounding counties over the last decade. While it was a difficult decision, I`m excited about the new opportunities that lie ahead. I`ll be sharing my future plans soon.”

Gov. Terry Branstad has five days to set a special election date.
