Senator Chuck Grassley is weighing in on the future of the straw poll in Iowa.
Earlier this week Governor Branstad surprised many when he said the annual event has outlived its usefulness.
The straw poll was started decades ago as an opportunity for Iowans to meet candidates. These days it has grown into a fundraising opportunity for the GOP. In recent years some well-known candidates have skipped it making the results irrelevant.
Governor Branstad is suggesting replacing the straw poll with several regional events.
Senator Chuck Grassley says he doesn’t have a strong opinion either way; he just wants to do whatever strengthens Iowa’s position as the first in the nation caucuses.
Iowa Republican Party chair A.J. Spiker has said it’s the party’s central committee along with presidential candidates who will decide the future of the straw poll.
