LIGHTS RESTORED: Vandalized Display Fixed
The Jolly Holiday Lights display will be sparkling like it is brand new Friday night.
Early Sunday morning a vandal drove through the display at Water Works Park. Police say about 15 of the 80 displays were damaged.
Authorities later found a license plate in the damaged displays and that led them to 20-year- old Justin Arey. He’s now facing a criminal mischief charge and is due back in court next week.
Friday afternoon volunteers returned to the park to put the fixed-up displays back up. Crews worked for about three hours to get the display as good as new.
Police estimated the damage at around $25,000.
The display raises money for the Iowa Make A Wish Foundation. Organizers say with proceeds from this year’s display they should be able to grant 35 wishes for Iowa children with life-threatening medical conditions.
The display opens at 5:30 Friday night.
