MURPHY’S LAW: Rivalry No More, Husker No Show, Johnny Heisman?
By: John Sears
Iowa crushed Iowa State in wrestling on Saturday 32-3. This used to be one of my favorite events to cover every year. Why? Because you could always expect drama, fireworks, maybe even some pushing and shoving from coaches. This is no longer a good rivalry. Tom Brands barely gets out of his chair during this dual anymore. The Hawks have now won 9 straight over the Cyclones, it’s getting worse every year. I have no idea what has happened to ISU wrestling. They are light years behind Iowa right now. ISU won 1 match on Saturday. ONE, a 5-4 decision at 197 pounds that Kyven Gadson squeaked out by 1 point over a true freshman. It’s going to be a long year for Iowa State. Iowa will contend for a national title, but I don’t think they will win it, few too many holes in key spots.
Nebraska just got beat 70-31 by Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game. Badgers rushed for 539 yards and only threw the ball 10 times. Butt-whoopin. But, don’t forget Nebraska did win the national title in 1997…
3 Freshman started for Iowa basketball today. That’s good and bad. Good that the young guys are worthy of starting, bad that some of the experienced players have regressed.
Will Clyburn dropped 32 for the Cyclones against BYU. Royce White tried telling us all that Clyburn was a better player, maybe we should have listened. I think Clyburn is a better scorer, still not sure he is a better ‘all-around’ player than White. My opinion on that could change.
I don’t think Johnny Manziel should be a lock for the Heisman. Leader in the clubhouse? Sure. But Collin Klein put up some big time numbers too, and the Wildcats are going to a BCS game.
