The warm December weather doesn’t seem to be having much impact on deer hunting.
Nearly 60,000 deer were harvested during the first shotgun season, which is about the same number as last year.
The DNR had said in the weeks leading up to the season that hunters could expect a busy season.
Kevin Baskins with the DNR told Channel 13, they were expecting 120,000 hunters in the field and about 40,000 deer to be harvested.
The second shotgun season runs from December 8 to16, with approximately 65,000 hunters expected to take part.
Five hunters were accidentally shot during the first shotgun season, so the DNR is reminding everyone to exercise safe practices. They say shooting at running deer and identifying the target and what is beyond the target remain the two primary causes of hunter injury and property damage.
