OTTUMWA, Ia. — A Wapello County Jail inmate escaped Monday morning after he’d been transported to the county courthouse for a hearing.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says 38-year-old Curtis Bunnell got away around 10:50 a.m. with the help of his wife. Officials say 27-year-old Latisha Bunnell had a green Thunderbird parked in front of the courthouse after the hearing. Curtis got away from authorities and dove into the open passenger side window of the car. Latisha sped away as soon as Curtis was in the vehicle.

Officials say Curtis was shackled and cuffed at the time of his escape.

The Thunderbird was later found in Ottumwa.

Curtis was being held in the Wapello County Jail on charges of first degree robbery and third degree criminal mischief.

A warrant is being issued for Curtis Bunnell for escape. A warrant for aiding and abetting escape is being issued for Latisha Bunnell.
