A Cedar Rapids man is in jail this weekend for allegedly killing his own mother.
Edward Cusic, 44, faces 1st Degree Murder charges for killing his mom, 68-year-old Anita Labkon.
Jeff Ray met his next door neighbor Anita Labkon for a few years. He met her son, Edward Cusic, when he moved in more recently after Labkon’s husband passed away. Ray never expected a crime to happen in their home.
“I was shocked,” said Ray. “I put the dogs away and they were barking and I come outside and come out to the front and here’s Ed in my yard doing circles for the police department and they cuffed him and hauled him away right in front of our window.”
Ray was at the neighbors’ home Friday night. After a power outage, something inside the home was beeping and Ray says he went over to lend a helping hand.
“The buzzer seemed to make him feel bad but other than that he was fine,” said Ray.
A few hours later Labkon was dead.
Police say they were called to the home on the 600 block of Old Marion Rd. NE just after 11pm Friday night with reports of a disturbance. When they arrived officers say Labkon was dead from “blunt force trauma.” They arrested her son on the scene.
He’s since been charged with first degree murder.
“I think the community is certainly upset by a crime of this magnitude occurring in their neighborhood, but it’s not a random act,” said Wayne Jerman, Cedar Rapids Police Chief.
But, the violence means Labkon won’t be able to attend the Christmas dinner she was looking forward to.
“I was looking forward to having them over for Christmas,” said Ray. We invited them over and Anita, especially was looking forward to getting over here and all of a sudden this happens.”
Cusic is currently in the Linn County Correctional Center.
