The city of Ankeny has a new mayor as of Monday night. Gary Lorenz was chosen by the council to fill the term of former Mayor Steve Van Oort.

Lorenz previously served two terms on the Ankeny city council, and has experience serving on several other area boards.

By appointing Lorenz instead of holding a special election, the city will save about $12,000.

The council voted 5-0 to appoint Lorenz over the other 7 candidates who applied for the job.

Van Oort resigned in the beginning of December, after he was appointed to the Polk County Board of Supervisors.

Lorenz’s term expires in December of next year.

Ankeny resident have 14 days to petition the city for a special election if they are unhappy with the council’s choice.
