An Ankeny family has received an early Christmas gift – the return of its dog after it went missing following a traffic accident last week.

Shannon Graves was involved in an accident last Wednesday at the east mix master. Her SUV flipped twice after being sideswiped. Shannon was lucky to escape the crash with only bumps and bruises.

The family’s dog, a Shih Tzu named Alyah, was in the vehicle at the time of the rollover but was spooked by the crash and ran away. The family has been searching for the pup since.

Alyah was a gift for Shannon’s twins’ 10th birthday.

Tuesday morning the family got the news that their beloved pet had been found. A Polk County Sheriff’s deputy found Alyah in Mally's Weh-Weh-Neh-Kee Park in Berwick.

Shannon took Alyah to the vet Tuesday and she was given a clean bill of health, but because she had burrs in her fur the vet had to shave her.

All the vet care was provided free of charge.

The family now has two Shih Tzu's because a puppy, which they've named Layla, was donated to the family during the search for Alyah.
