Trying to stay warm nearly cost a family their home Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the 900 block of Leland Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

When they arrived firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from a second floor bedroom. They were able to get the fire under control before it spread to the rest of the home.

Investigators are looking into the exact cause, but they believe it started with an electric blanket. “The occupant stated she had just placed a heating blanket and heating pad on a mattress on the upstairs bedroom, so when firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming out of a second floor, they made an interior attack and the fire was contained to just the bedding area itself,” said Brain O’Keefe with the Des Moines Fire Department.

Everyone got out of the house safely.
