Police are investigating the murder of a West Des Moines woman outside her Colorado apartment building.
Emily Weikert was found shot to death in the parking garage at the Promenade Place Apartments in Dener, Colorado. The 25-year-old was found with two gunshots to her back Thursday morning.
Police were quickly able to identify a person of interest in the case, but when they arrived at the apartment of 51-year-old Robert Lewis, they found him barricaded inside.
Lewis held police in a standoff for 11-hours before taking his own life.
Investigators say Lewis worked at CoBank for 20-years, but he was fired recently for allegedly harassing Weikart at work.
Now people in Iowa are remembering Weikert. She attended both West Des Moines’ Valley High School and Iowa State University.
Former classmate Ashley Hartkorn said, “For someone who is so kind hearted, you don’t expect something like this to happen to them. I think everyone who has heard about it is still in shock right now.”
Another classmate Caroline Wheeler remembered, “I moved to Valley when I was a junior in high school and knew nobody. She was one of the first people to talk to me, and befriend me. I could never thank her enough for that.”
