VOTER PURGE: Public Hearing On Proposed Rule

A public hearing is being held Thursday on a rule proposed by Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz that would allow the removal of voters from registration rolls if citizenship can’t be proven.

Schultz first proposed the rule ahead of the November elections but a judge ruled to temporarily stop it after the ACLU filed a lawsuit.

Opponents say Schultz doesn’t have the authority to implement the rule without legislative approval.

The hearing is being held at the Lucas State Office Building, on the 6th floor in the Department of Public Health offices. It runs from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A final ruling on the ACLU’s lawsuit has not been made.
