It’s still early in the season, but some Iowa flu clinics are already running low on the vaccine.

A Cedar Falls Hospital says they have less than 100 doses of the vaccine left despite ordering more than 3,000 at the start of the year.

Hospital officials across the country are finding themselves in the same boat. They say because of last year’s mild flu season, fewer doses were ordered this year. Now that the season is shaping up to be worse than usual, there’s a rush to get the shot, and once they run out, they don’t usually order more.

The type of vaccine also varies; the flu mist has a shorter shelf life so officials say it may be harder to come by than traditional shots.

Polk County Health officials say they still have plenty of the vaccines on hand.
