There is a unique tour going on this weekend with stops in some of Iowa’s small towns like Pella.

“In Iowa alone from 1850 to 1915 or so there were over a thousand opera houses functioning here in Iowa,” explains Pella Opera House executive director, Kevin McQuade.

This weekend, Des Moines’ own Thankful Dirt band will join other artists for the Iowa opera house project.

The tour highlights Iowa’s historic opera houses which are still open today.

The tour will feature Dave Moore who plays for Garrison Keillor on a Prairie Home Companion.

Kevin McQuade says events like this will help raise awareness of opera houses, “I was just thrilled about the whole idea of using our space, to let Iowans see fellow Iowans play great music in a space in other communities no longer exists.”

The concert is Saturday at 7 p.m. in Pella.

Admission is $10.
