Beauty pageants have been known to stir up some sort of controversy over the years; did it fall to the Miss Iowa contestant on this year’s Miss America?

21-year old Muscatine native, Mariah Cary had previously won Little Miss Iowa and the Junior Miss Iowa titles. On the stage for Miss America she was asked whether two US states  legalizing marijuana’s recreational use was the right direction for the country.

After describing the merits of medical marijuana, the Mount Mercy College student added, “I don’t think it should be used for anything else but recreational use and health care.”

Cary eventually finished 5th tap dancing her way to fourth runner-up.

That muddled response was overshadowed by Miss California, Leah Cecil whom responded to a pre-pageant question on ABC about her thoughts on euthanasia, “That’s a vaccine, right?”
