Monday at the Statehouse, Gov. Terry Branstad honored a group of heroes that battled to bring the power back.

Over the noon hour the governor held a special recognition ceremony to recognize about 100 utility workers from across the state that responded to the East Coast after Hurricane Sandy hit.

The superstorm left over 8 million homes and businesses without power for days.

“I also think it’s very fitting that we are hosting this event today on the first day of the legislative session. It is a reminder to all of us and all lawmakers coming to Des Moines that Iowans are sincere, hardworking people who take pride in the work that they do and are willing to offer a helping hand to those in need,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

There were also plenty of sweet treats for those that attended the recognition event.
