Des Moines area families struggling to put food on the table have a new option for help.

The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network has opened a new food pantry site at the Central Iowa Shelter and Services.

The new site is one of two pantries designed with a grocery store feel, where people can “shop” for items from specific categories based on family size and preference.

According to DMARC, research has shown that being able to select their own food helps consumers retain dignity as well as reduces waste because they are choosing items they want rather than taking what they are given.

The Central Iowa Shelter and Services Pantry is located at 1420 Mulberry Street and is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Families in need can receive a four day supply of food once per month.
