Students in Iowa will have to get one more shot before heading to school in the fall.
Children enrolling in grades 7 through 12 will be required to get a one-time booster shot for whopping cough if they were born on or after September 15, 2000.
A 2012 study by the Department of Public Health found a 121 percent increase in the number of cases in Iowa. The Department of Public Health says whooping cough cases spike every couple of years and this will help reduce that number.
Children usually get the vaccine when they are toddlers, but it was only recommended that they get a booster shot around 11-years-old. Now it will be required.
