NEW LIFE: Knoxville Looks to Reopen Theater
The Grand Theater also known as the Village Theatre on the square in downtown Knoxville last showed a film in 2011. People around the area have been saying since it closed,it would be great to see it open again. Now a group of volunteers is working with the owner to try to buy the property.
The projection equipment would face an expensive upgrade to digital projection, something which could cost over $500,000. Also Knoxville leaders say they want to use the stage for live performances in town.
Larissa VanDonselaar is the Knoxville Chamber Director.”We want people to know that there is a group of people moving forward,” she said. She added they “hope to proceed with opening the theater and setting the foundation for what that it going to look like.”
The theater is owned by Fridley Theaters. A company representative said it was put up for sale as the company moves toward multi-screen venues.People interested in the theater reopening should contact the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce.
