MORNING BUZZ: Guns and Questions
Good Morning. Guns still dominating the News today.
Joe Scarburough may have said it best yesterday. The ground is shifting under Republicans’ feet and they seem to not notice…He tweeted,
The House can pass comprehensive gun legislation now and have Speaker Boehner shape it, or wait two years for Speaker Pelosi to do it.
Scarburough also points out that Reagan and Justice Scalia…not exactly the two most liberal men, supported assault rifle bans.
Still, there are people who are trying to frame this debate as a way for a uber-liberal President to confiscate guns. It makes sane, law-abiding gun owners look crazy. Take the people give credence to some crackpot story about the Newtown shooting being a massive government engineered conspiracy. Do you really think all of those people could keep that secret? Someone would get rich telling some tabloid…
Take away the conspiracy…what about someone who thinks the ultimate motivation behind this is to completely take away guns from Americans. Play that tape to the end. How would that work? If that started happening…what do you think people would do or say about it? Do you think all 50 National Guard organizations would be in on it? Lets just say the Military decided to come seize guns. Even if you HAVE an automatic weapon, how do you think you are going to do against the platoon of Marines your imagination created to come confiscate your weapons? If you are a Citizen of the United States don’t you have to have a minimum amount of faith in the system of checks and balances built-in to our government?
I am not mocking people who fear restrictions on second amendment rights; I’m honestly asking… Maybe a healthy fear of government restrictions is what preserves the rights of law-abiding gun owners, but even people who support the right to own a gun are put off by the kind of rhetoric the NRA is using to try to change the subject. Someone tried to say I shouldn’t have an opinion on this because I don’t know the difference between a clip and a magazine. I know the difference between 10 bullets and 100.
There are real, legitimate arguments to be made for gun ownership. This right can stand on it’s own…but it isn’t perfect and it isn’t sacred. The constitution once valued black people at two-thirds of a person. We decided that needed to be changed. Women couldn’t vote. People were pretty sure about that one at the time. I think a vast majority of people support the ownership of guns. The degree to which someone can legally arm themselves is worth a debate.
The story that’s been built up through the College Football Season of the death of Manti Te’o's girlfriend just before the Michigan State game is a Hoax. The University released a statement painting Te’o as the victim of a cruel joke. I still have a lot of unanswered questions. The doesn’t add up. Why didn’t Manti go to the funeral? Wasn’t he suspicious when there wasn’t an obituary? Why was his father under the impression that this woman (who didn’t exist) had actually visited Manti in Hawaii? Who put out the story about her being a student at Stanford? We’re not getting a full picture of what happened. Deadspin, which broke the story is insinuating that Te’o was in on the hoax to bolster his reputation. The only reason I have a hard time with that is, The University hired a private investigator to look into this. if they found out Te’o was lying, they would have thrown him under the bus to protect the University’s brand. We will find out more.
All of this talk of guns and hoaxes is bringing me down…So i thought I’d share another funny from the boys. JT and Will got one of my favorite Disney movies for Christmas, Robin Hood. So at one point in the movie, one of the characters says, “Save your sermon Preacher”. For whatever reason the boys picked up on it. Lately I’d tell them to do something and they’d come back with, “Save your sermon Preacher”. Then yesterday Lynette was feeding them lunch and JT looked at her and said, “Welcome to my world”.
Four going on forty.
Have a good one
