The United Way of Central Iowa knew setting a lofty goal for donations was going to be tough with a sluggish economy, but they didn’t let it stop them.
They set a goal to collect $26.5 million in 2012 in order to break the record setting year they had the year before.
As it turns out, they didn’t just break last year’s record, they smashed it, collecting $26.58 million, exceeding their previous record by $1.5 million.
More than 40,000 people donated to the goal.
The United Way will use the money to support many projects and initiatives around Central Iowa, but their focus will be improving the education, income and health of those in need.
