Monday is Martin Luther King Junior day.

Many schools are closed, and there is no mail service, trash collection is delayed and most banks are also closed.

Several events will be held to honor Doctor King.

At 11 a.m., Governor Branstad will attend a ceremony at the Fort Des Moines Museum.

After the ceremony, volunteers will build homeless kits from 1-3 p.m..

A prayer breakfast starts at 7.15 this morning at the Grubb YMCA on 11th street.

From 10 a.m. to noon, also at the Grubb YMCA, volunteers hope to package 35,000 meals for Meals from the Heartland.

Students of the NAACP Youth Council will also hold a memorial program.

The council objected to the Des Moines School District decision to make up a snow day on the holiday. Board members eventually sided with the NAACP Youth Council and decided not to hold class.

The group’s memorial program is at 6 Monday night at Faith Missionary Baptist Church on Third Street.
