WEEKLY WORKOUT: Wellness Coaching

Do you need a little encouragement to help you with your fitness goals?  Maybe what you need is a wellness coach.  They’re more than a fitness instructor or personal trainer.  Wellness coaches assist you with your workout, your diet and emotional challenges.

At the beginning of 2013, Sarah Bosen decided it was time to take control of her life and set a better example for her three kids.

“I want to be a healthier me from here on out,” says Sarah, who wants a lifestyle change.

“If I lose weight along the way, that’s great.  I’d love that, but I need a healthier lifestyle for myself.  I’m a mom of three and I want to make a healthier lifestyle for them and for my husband, and set a better example for my kids.”

Sarah turned to Ami Bolles, the Director of Health Wellness at the YMCA in Waukee.

“It’s a service we provide to all of our members to partner with them and empower them on their fitness journey, their wellness journey,” says Ami.

That journey begins with the coach and the member sitting down and getting to know one another.

“I got emotional the first time we met,” says Sarah.

She says she’s always been self-conscious about her weight, which is on reason she’s shied away from gyms.

“I think something that’s really held me back is that it’s very intimidating to me to look at everybody in the class knowing what they’re doing, or they know how to use that machine,” says Sarah.  “I’m new to this, this is something I’ve never done in my life.”

Ami is here to build Sarah’s self-esteem and hopefully, some muscle along the way.  She’ll develop a workout plan, offer motivation and help keep Sarah on track.

“We want to pick one behavior at a time,” says Ami.  “It’s overwhelming to think of all the different healthy lifestyle components. We pick one component and make that a goal and get on maintenance on that before we get to the next one.”

Right now, the goal for Sarah is to workout five times a week.  Ami will even join her in a Zumba class to ease Sarah’s fears about group fitness classes.

“I’m excited,” says Sarah.  “I want to be a healthier me from here on out.”

And we’ll follow her on her journey to becoming healthier.
