This weekend, Iowa senator Tom Harkin made an announcement that surprised more than a few people — he will retire at the end of his term in 2014.

Speculation is now running wild over who will run for his seat.

Eastern Iowa congressman Bruce Braley, who is a Democrat, says he’s strongly considering it.

“Running for a statewide office is a very serious consideration. I’m going to sit down with my family and talk about it. I’ve had a large number of people reach out to me since the announcement was made encouraging me to consider running but it’s a very important decision so I’m going to be taking my time and giving it thoughtful consideration and at some point, make a decision,” says Braley.

Braley gave no definite timetable for that decision. He just began his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Braley has also expressed interest in running for governor.
