A sendoff ceremony was held Monday morning in Ottumwa to say goodbye to about 100 Iowa National Guard members bound for duty in Afghanistan.

Friends, family, and community members gathered at Indian Hills Community College to send off members of the 833rd Engineer Company.

The company’s year-long mission in Afghanistan will be to sweep for explosives, execute mobility missions, remove physical obstacles, and perform infantry missions.

The soldiers will first be sent to Fort Bliss, Texas for training before being deployed overseas.
