Forty-eight groups are calling on Iowa lawmakers and the governor to expand government-paid Medicaid.
Among those pushing for the change is the Iowa Hospital Association and the AARP. The expansion the groups are asking for would cover up to 90,000 additional Iowans.
Backers say the expansion would create jobs, better the economy, and create a healthier population.
The governor is against expanding Medicaid. Monday, he said about 400,000 people in Iowa are on Medicaid. That’s almost twice the number covered compared to when he was first in office.
The governor says it hasn’t made Iowans any healthier.
