A new system is in place in Cedar Rapids with the goal of increasing efficiency means residents will need to pay their parking tickets on time.

The city already has speed and red light cameras, and now Cedar Rapids parking ambassadors will begin using another camera equipped with license plate recognition software.

The cameras will use license plate recognition software to see if drivers have any outstanding parking tickets. The equipment can also recognize vehicles that have exceeded the overtime parking limit.

The city says the $30,000 investment save workers time.

The city will spend the next two weeks training on the software. Once training is complete they will start enforcing parking more strictly.

Officials say they expect to turn a profit by the end of the year.
