The city of Des Moines is getting a lot of money to clean up a west side eyesore.

Greenwood Park is one of the city’s most popular parks, but each summer it’s pond is overtaken by algae blooms that reduce recreation in and around it.

The city accepted a $300,000 grant from the DNR Resource Enhancement and Protection Program to fix the problem.

Parks and Recreation will begin working on a plan to improve the watershed near the pond this spring and hope to have the project complete by early 2014.
