PAPER PROBLEM: Fight Threatens Future

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin went to Iowa State for his college degree. It remains to be seen whether his papers will now follow.

Harkin and ISU President Steven Leath don’t agree on the rules concerning the use of Harkin’s collection of personal and professional papers from his 40 years serving in congress.

The original plans called for the papers to be on display at the Harkin Institute, located on the ISU campus. But disagreements over possible restrictions of the use of the papers have stopped Harkin from turning them over to the institute, at least for now.

Harkin confirmed he is considering housing his life’s work at Drake University instead.

Harkin also addressed criticism that a foreign company donated $500,000 to the institute and what role his campaign staff had in helping to direct money to the institute.

Harkin answered those questions to Dave Price on Channel 13’s The Insiders.
