CHILD PORN: Victim Wants Harsher Penalties

A victim of child sex trafficking is now working with the Iowa legislature to crack down on child porn possession.

“I don’t know. (I) just try to block it out because I don’t want to remember.” says 21-year old Brittany Phillips from her adoptive parents home as she fights back tears. Even after six years, the wounds are still fresh. When Brittany was just 14, she ran away from abusive parents and into the clutches of a child predator. She was brought to Chicago to be used for prostitution when she was rescued by a police officer who realized she was under-age.

Now, Phillips is working with the legislature to change the charges for possession of child porn from an aggravated misdemeanor to a felony. That would increase prison time for offenders and put them on the sex offender registry.

“The victims of human trafficking are often times the subjects of the photographs or the videos in child pornography.” says Representative Chip Baltimore (R) Boone, “We wanted to make sure that the sentence for the crime matches the severity.”

Baltimore says he doubts the bill will face any opposition in the house or senate.
