Ankeny labor unions and the city council have agreed to new five-year contracts. At their regularly scheduled Monday meeting the Ankeny City Council unanimously approved the agreement with the police union, marking the last step in negotiations between the city and its three bargaining units.

At a meeting last month the council approved contracts with AFSCME and the firefighters union. The contracts include an average of 2 percent annual cost of living increase over the five year period, employee contributions to the City’s health plan and a redesigned union pay model.

Ankeny City Manager Jim Spradling said the approval is not only good for the unions it’s also good for taxpayers. “It provides budget certainty and stability and because of the restructuring of the pay matrices, the City is more comparable with other cities in the Des Moines Metropolitan area,” he said.
