The park at Meyers Lake in Evansdale will now be called Angels’ Park in memory of cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins. The girls were last seen riding their bikes near Meyers Lake in July, there bodies were found by hunters in Bremer County 5-months later.
Donna Frickson of the Evansdale Chamber of Commerce said the Parks Board in Evansdale approved the re-naming of the park at Meyers Lake on Monday night. Frickson also said the trail around the park will now be called, Trail of Angels, in memory of the girls.
Signs reflecting the new names have not been posted yet.
In December of 2012, the Chamber also requested to declare July 13th (the last day the girls were seen alive) of each year as “Elizabeth and Lyric Day”.
In a City Council meeting in December, Evansdale Mayor Chad Deutsch said he would be willing to sign a proclamation supporting the group’s request.
The Chamber says there are other memorials being worked on, including a park on the island of Meyers Lake.
A fund has been established to help cover costs of the memorials. Donations can be made at First Security State Bank in Evansdale or Cedar Falls to the “Meyers Lake Cousins Memorial Fund.”
