Kids from across the metro went on a special field trip to Wells Fargo Arena Thursday.

About 6,000 kids from dozens of central Iowa schools packed the arena for the annual Education Celebration Iowa Energy game.

“We always love having the players come to buildings and they get to see where we work…so it’s nice that we can return the favor and go see where they work,” Director of Elementary School Services for DMPS Mike Lord said.

The players took on the Texas Legends in a special morning game.

Organizers say the event is tons of fun, but there’s also a focus on learning.

Each child gets a workbook with a word search, a geography section discussing where the Energy players come from and information about black history month.

“Kids come out learn about basketball, but more importantly they learn about our anti-bullying campaign. It’s really an opportunity to come out and socialize with other students and learn how to behave outside of the classroom,” Iowa Energy General Manager Chris Makris said.

It was a close game, but Texas went home with the win.

The final score was 108 to 106.
