DMACC cooked up 6,000 pounds of bacon Friday in preparation for Saturday’s Bacon Fest but there was one Iowa pig being spared.

“I do hearby proudly proclaim Bonnie the pig free from the sizzle of the pan of The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.”

Branstad exercised executive power pardoning Bonnie the pig Friday morning at Terrace Hill. Bonnie is a 100% pure heirloom Berkshire sow from Eden Farms.

The Governor says he's pardoned plenty of turkeys before thanksgiving but this is the first pig.

Branstad added that there are 8,300 pork farms in Iowa that are home to 37-million hogs.
