Studies show that fewer women than men take jobs in the math and science field.
Saturday, an event at the Science Center of Iowa educated girls about STEM.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
Science journalist Kate Sookle says Iowa is a great training ground for young girls interested in the science field.
“Iowa has lot of great universities and it certainly does have fantastic engineering programs. I think it’s just understanding that there are great female STEM role models out there and there are fantastic universities and opportunities and I think the start is education.”
Only 20 percent of women graduate college with a science related degree compared to nearly 50 percent of men.
