Monday night, the Des Moines City Council will recommend laying off five employees in the Housing Services department.

The City says the layoffs are due to federal funding reductions to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The cuts mean the City’s municipal housing agency is facing a projected budget deficit of about $400,000.

The department will one person retiring this year, and has no plans to fill the position.
