The latest Des Moines Register Iowa poll shows a majority of Iowans approve of President Obama’s plan to tighten gun laws.

The poll shows 88-percent of Iowans favor requiring background checks for all gun sales, including those at gun shows.

And about 60-percent of Iowans say the government should ban military style weapons and limit the size of ammunition clips.

The poll also asked Iowans about the contributing factors to gun violence and nearly three fourths of people say lack of available treatment for those with mental illness is a major factor.

Supporters of gun control legislation will gather at the State Capitol Monday.

Members of Iowans for Gun Safety and other gun violence prevention groups will hold a rally outside the Capitol at 11 a.m.
