A West Des Moines man has announced his candidacy for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District.

Democrat Mike Sherzan will join the 2014 race for the seat currently held by Republican Tom Latham.

Sherzan is the CEO of Broker Dealer Financial Services Corp. in West Des Moines.  He is the first democrat to declare his candidacy for the seat.  In the press release announcing his intent to run Sherzan says politicians in Washington are spending their time pushing special interests and a radical agenda.  He hopes to meet with Iowans and find ways to change that.

The 3rd district represents the southwestern portion of the state stretching from Polk County to Pottawattamie County.  It is not yet clear if Sherzan will be challenging incumbent Tom Latham, there has been speculation Latham will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Tom Harkin in 2014.

If the 3rd district seat is open in 2014 it will become highly contested as both parties try to extend their reach in the state. Iowa’s four U.S. House seats are currently split between two Democrats and two Republicans.
