A gun was found in the carry-on luggage of a man accused of plotting to have his ex-wife killed Wednesday at the Des Moines International Airport.

TSA Transportation Security Officers say the gun was found in the bag of 33-year-old John Thompson of Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was discovered during security screening

Authorities say the gun, a .380 Ruger LCP, was unloaded but the bag contained more than 50 rounds of ammunition.

Des Moines police took Thompson into custody, but he has since been released. He was charged with unauthorized possession of offensive weapons.

The Fayetteville Observer says Thompson was arrested in September and charged with solicitation to commit a felony and conspiracy.

TSA officials say this is the second firearm discovered at screening at the Des Moines International Airport this year.
