DAY TWO: Individual Tournament Begins

Channel 13’s John Sears was at the Well for day two of the State Wrestling Tournament.

Class 1A and 3A took to the mats early in the day.

Some 3A highlights include:

For the 113 Valley’s Clayton Eicher comes in ranked #2, he fights hard for a 9-1 victory.  Eicher says he’s back for redemption from a year ago.  “Last year I got beat out in the state tournament and I just took that as motivation to come back and win it this year.”

At 120 John Gioffredi from Indianola gets the late take down to win 9-8. He was all smiles afterwards saying, “Once you get back and you win it’s the best feeling ever.”

For the 170 Southeast Polk’s Dylan Blackford gets another pin for the Rams, but he says, “I can’t get too big of a head, I need to just go out and wrestle my matches and keep my mind on the next score.”

Some 1A highlights include:

At 120, #1 ranked Kyler Kiner of Ogden puts Alburnett's Jordan Henderson in a world of trouble and gets the pin.

For 138 West Marshall's Kyle Blocker entered the tournament as the guy to beat. He’s shows why he’s #1 for a reason taking Jason Kenny down quickly.

Class 2A hit the mats in the evening, highlights include:

Creston’s Jake Marlin is looking for his fourth state title this tournament. He barely had to break a sweat Thursday, it took him 37 seconds to pin his opponent from Humbolt.

In the 145 Grinnell’s Brody Beck fought hard for 4-2 win over Patrick Rooney of Bondurant-Ferrar. “He was ranked a little bit higher than I was, I just went out there and tried to push the pace as much as possible and get the job done,” Beck explained.

Team standings show Alburnett leading class 1A, Assumption in the lead for 2A, and Southeast Polk already ahead in 3A.
