The National Farmers Union executive board is meeting with members of Congress this week to outline the organization’s priorities and underline the importance of working on the passage of a five-year farm bill.

According to NFU President Roger Johnson - passage of a new comprehensive, five-year farm bill in 2013 is the most critical issue for rural America and consumers. He says farmers, ranchers and the lenders that provide them credit are struggling to make business decisions in this uncertain policy environment.

Johnson says we need a strong safety net in order to ensure certainty for the continuation of family farm and ranch operations. He says having NFU members talk directly to their members of Congress - sharing their stories and describing the challenges they face on a daily basis - is extremely valuable.
